Alternatives to labor and delivery

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

It is pretty much agreed that the usual way to have a baby is when you deliver in a hospital.Or to be more precise, a lot of people think that when you have a baby that you have to use medicine. In this article we hope to point out some facts that break those assumptions.  We are going to offer alternatives that might be better.

Of course these observations are going to be coming from the viewpoint of my experience running a San Diego midwife service. If you aren’t knowledgeable about midwives, they are women who are there to assist in the delivery process for women.Usually all the time without needing to use medicines in a homebirth.

So why do some women choose this method? For a quite a few women who do choose this method and understand it, they have several factors for it.

First off, the use of no medicine actually helps speed up the labor and delivery process.  Most women don’t realize that the use of medicine actually slows down the labor.Women always use it because they are told it helps with the pain, but in reality it makes the pain happen longer.  There are many certified midwives in San Diego who can show you proof of that.

Second, when you do use a natural method such as a waterbirth, it actually helps the muscles and the body because it soothes and relaxes during the delivery. This produces a delivery with less pain and makes having the delivery occur much faster.  I have seen it helping many women have a waterbirth in San Diego.

Those are just the beginning of many reasons that women have chosen a homebirth rather than the usual method of delivery.Even though there is no use of medicine and doctors aren’t usually present, it is still a safe alternative.  The delivery at home actually helps the delivery remain private and dignified.  Rather than in a hospital where there are several people who poke and prod through the labor.  So for these reasons many woman prefer a homebirth. It is a dignified and safe way and a process that is natural.

Some options for your pregnancy

One of the best times in a woman’s life is pregnancy.A lot of women really want to have kids.It is during those pregnancy months that those desires start to now come true.

During that pregnancy a lot of choices need to be made. One of those decisions and options is the method of delivery. It is a little strange to imply that there are different options be there are. Most women will chose to use medicine to help them have the baby. But there is a movement that is getting larger who decide to have the baby naturally. In other words no use of medicine to help with the delivery.  I have seen this from first hand experience as a San Diego midwife. It is taken from that experience that I am going to express various benefits.

Now why are some women choosing non medical delivery.  A couple of reasons.First point is that a lot of women are now realizing that medicine actually makes the delivery go slower.  When you are in pain and want to deliver as fast as possible, medicine defeats the purpose.  Many women are starting to realize that.  What women don’t realize is that they can do it that way. If they decide to go that route, they can decide on going with a midwife.  In my part of the country there are quite a few midwives in San Diego.

A midwife is able to help a woman gently deliver.  They could choose a waterbirth.Waterbirth is a way to delivery that uses water to ease the pain and ease the delivery.

Another thing is if a woman decides, a midwife can also help in a homebirth as well. Once again you can find a homebirth midwife in San Diego if you look.

The benefits of doing it at home is a relaxed and a less stressful environment. These two benefits alone make it inviting to have it naturally. If you are with child, it could be a decision you might want to consider.

Benefits of having a baby at home

The birthing of a baby is one of the most cherished moments of a woman’s life.  The experience of delivering a new life is like no other.  Although it comes with great pain, most women will agree it is worth it.

As a San Diego midwife I would like to share with you a method that you might not be aware of.It is also known as waterbirth.

Waterbirth has been called probably of all the methods of delivery the gentlest. It utilizes and requires the use of a bath or pool that is heated.A few woman will just use the water for the pain of the labor part. This is done because the water that is heated is very pain relieving.  It is soothing to the tissues.

Other women also use it to deliver the baby. They don’t leave the water till the delivery is all the way through.Even going through it all including delivering the placenta.

The whole process is usuallly performed and helped by someone called a midwife.  If you are in San Diego there are plenty of midwives San Diego. You are going to want to have an experienced one.

Why do quite a few women pick this way of delivering over the hosptial method? As mentioned previously, it is very painful the labor and delivery part.  Most women use drugs to cope with the pain. But for a few women, the last thing they want to do is have drugs harm the new baby.Using waterbirth for delivery helps ease some of the pain.  Because of the
heated water it soothes the tissues and helps with the pain.

Most women will have this procedure usually done naturally. They usually won’t use any drugs to dull the pain of labor.  Often times this actually helps the labor happen faster.Because when you use the drugs it can really slow down the labor.

It is really a safe alternate way of delivery. For some women who are wanting to have their baby naturally this might be a choice to go with.  I have seen many happy deliveries as a San Diego licensed midwife. All it will require of a woman is to do a little research and see for themselves
how safe it is.

How to Have a Joyous Delivery

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

One of the sad effects of our modern day and age in medicine is how birth and delivery have become a medical procedure.

That might seem foreign to some people because most people already think of delivery as being a medical event. But that is the big problem. It isn’t a medical event. It is an occassion that can be kept as private and as natural as possible through alternate methods.  Women
should be made aware that there are alternatives.

I would like to present one of those main alternatives from the perspective of a San Diego midwife.

That main way is by having a midwife assist you in a homebirth during your delivery.  This practice is known as midwifery and there are plenty of midwives San Diego.

As cesareans and induction rates soar in hospitals, it has turned the joyous event of a delivery into an negative experience.

That is one of the main reasons for the push for more natural births through a licensed midwife or certified midwife.

Birth and the delivery shouldn’t necessarily include drugs, invasive procedures, private areas constantly being probled, etc.   It can be done safely and effectively in a home environment through that homebirth method or even a waterbirth San Diego method.

It is an industry that is highly regulated. You are able to know all about a midwife’s experience and skill if you are considering hiring them.

But getting over that stigma of not having a baby in a hospital takes education.  But through experience and statistics most women can see that a lot of times having a baby in a hospital negatively effects the process. From potent drugs that are used ot slow the pregnancy down, or used to increase the speed of the pregnancy.  To having to go through a c-section.Hopefully women can see the comparisons and the contrast and see the success of using a midwife.

So for those women who want to try and keep the delivery of the baby a joyous occasion, using a midwife might be something they should look into.

With the day and age of the internet, finding information about the natural process is as easy as doing a search on the internet.

There they can find very helpful information so they can understand the process fully. They can view any safety concerns and how it is handled. And most importantly they are able to witness the keeping of the delivery of a child a monumental occasion that is kept private and is still a happy event.

Choosing a midwife safely

Pregnancy, what a wonderful time for a woman.  Well, I guess aside from the sickness.  But beyond that, the expectation of a new baby coming is exciting.

Usually, for women in general, the question of how you are going to have the baby isn’t that big.Because most women just do it the usual way which is a medical procedure which includes hospitalization, doctors, and drugs.

But for some women, there is an alternative. That alternative is finding a midwife to help you have a baby the natural way.  And it is that alternative I am going to share from my experience as a San Diego midwife.

For those that don’t know, midwives are women who perform natural, no drugs, deliveries. This usually means no doctors.

Often times midwives in San Diego perform these services at homes.Although, maybe unusualy for most people, this alternative way to deliver a baby is safe and regulated.

The women, or midwife, who performs this service is fully regulated. They can come in two forms which are a certified midwife or a licensed midwife, both of which are regulated and overseen by a board.

Sometimes they can be a nurse, but it is not a requirement.

This form of delivery is an option a lot of women choose and includes waterbirth in San Diego. Mostly this choice is made by women who don’t want any drugs during delivery to keep the new baby away from drugs. Also it is going to be for some women who don’t want invasive procedures.

Well when you are making decisions as big as how you are going to deliver, you obviously want them to be the right choices. With most things, you want to pick the right person.

Like I mentioned before, this is a highly regulated industry. With that being the case, finding a good midwife who is licensed or certified is easy.

All you have to do is find your state regulatory board that  oversees midwives and do a background check to see if there have been any complaints or issues with your prospective midwife.

With that simple step, you are able to determine if this is a quality midwife you can trust. It is still obvious that even though there are no complaints or reports about your midwife, you still want to verify some references.

You are going to want to find a midwife whose clients speak highly of them.  With something as intimate and important as a delivery following these few steps will help you find the right midwife for your delivery.

Benefits of Delivering with a Midwife

Pregnancy and delivery; a source of joy and pain for the woman.Obviously there is joy because of the newborn baby, but any woman will tell you, it was a source of unspeakable pain.

Well it is because of that pain that there are two schools of thought on how pregnancy and delivery should be carried about.  I am going to offer some perspective on one particular school of thought that I have gained first hand experience with by being a homebirth midwife San Diego.

There is the medical model for delivery which is associated with drugs to kill the pain, and sometimes cesarean to complete the delivery.

While there is another model, which though not widely accepted, for those who believe in it and have experience it consider it much safer and natural for the woman.

That model is called the midwifery model.  That model is in stark contrast with the medical model.Where you have the medical model which depends a lot on medicine, midwifery prefers to rely on the natural.  Midwifery believes that pregnancy and delivery is a natural process and thus should be allowed to happen naturally.

This model is carried out by a profession called midwives. Midwives San Diego are generally woman, who attend the birth, often times at the mother’s home. This midwife would help with some techniques that help the woman go through labor as naturally as possible without drugs.

Contrary to popular belief, the non-use of medicine actually allows the labor to happen much faster because most pain killers actually slows the labor down.

The midwife is a professional with a regulatory board that certifies and licenses the individual.

Although usually not a nurse or doctor, a midwife can be a nurse as well.

Even though they are not formal doctors or nurses, they will have some medical equipment for emergencies like resuscitation devices and equipment for suturing.

So this is what a midwife is and what midwifery is in regards to pregnancy and delivery.

Their objective is to let the labor and delivery to occur as naturally as possible.  This reduces the likelihood of a c-section.Does not subject you to hospital procedures that are invasive such as episiotomys.  Less medical management like breaking the water or using drugs to slow or speed up the pregnancy. And the part woman love the most, usually labor and delivery happen much faster naturally.

Hopefully this was informative and helped you understand some of the benefits of midwifery and having a midwife there for your pregnancy.  At the very least, hopefully it gives you more options to explore.  Remember this is first hand knowledge from a San Diego midwife.
